Big Sky Documentary Film Festival

The Big Sky Documentary Film Festival is hosting the second annual

Big Sky International Documentary Pitch Session on February 23, 2012.

The pitch will take place as part of Big Sky Doc Shop (Feb 21-24), a

four day non-fiction industry forum during the ninth annual film

festival.

Entry Fee: $25

Submission Deadline: January 6, 2012

Filmmakers have the opportunity to pitch their

work-in-progress(WIP)documentaries to some of the top commissioning

editors and funders for documentary film in North America. All

documentary forms and all subjects are eligible to submit.

Commissioning editors will critique and comment on each pitch. A

maximum of 15 projects will be accepted to pitch in this session.

Potential participants should submit a brief (250 words maximum)

project summary and an additional one-paragraph project status

report. A short (5 minutes maximum) sample reel of the

work-in-progress may be submitted (via vimeo, youtube.com, blip.tv,

etc.) in addition to the written application. Selected projects will

have 20 minutes to pitch their project and show a short sample (if

available) for the panel. Selected projects will be required to pay

an additional $75 to participate, and will be notified of their

acceptance by January 11, 2012.

French Film Contest

At the occasion of the 6th World Water Forum, that will take place in Marseille (France) from March 12 to 17, 2012, the International Secretariat for Water launches the 3rd edition of the International Water and Film Events. (IWFE)

Movie directors, producers, water stakeholders, students, youths… and all citizens, wishing to express their views on water are invited to participate in this competition.

An international jury will give out 16 awards (27 600 $US in prizes) during a special ceremony at the 6th World Water Forum.
The competition is free. 5 categories are open to the competition:

·         The “Soft Spot” category (10 minutes max.) by 11-16 year-olds;
·         A VidéEau category (1 minute max.) by 17-30 year-olds;
·         Personal stories-type documentaries (max. 26 minutes) made by civil society organisations, local stakeholders, etc.;
·         Scientific or educational films (max. 26 minutes);
·         Documentaries made by film professionals for screening in cinemas
or on television.

Deadline for registration is November 30th 2011 and we must receive your movies by the 31st of December 2011.

Short Film Competition with Legal Theme!

The Forum on Law, Culture & Society is currently accepting submissions for our inaugural Short Film Competition on a legal theme.

Winning shorts will be screened during the annual Forum Film Festival in New York City in October 2012. Each year the Forum’s Film Festival features renowned filmmakers, actors, writers, journalists, public intellectuals, and members of the legal profession. The Film Festival also attracts overflowing and diverse crowds of film enthusiasts, which provides a great platform for showcasing your winning work.

While this is a legal-themed film competition, we want you to have fun, be creative and take some chances on new approaches. Any genre goes—musical, documentary, thriller, drama, romantic comedy, to name a few. We are looking for films dealing with the law and legal issues, not just a police drama or murder mystery. Visit the Forum Web site for an idea of the variety of legal-themed films that have been screened at Forum events.

Students, independent filmmakers and amateur/aspiring filmmakers are all invited to enter.

Videographer Needed Right Away!

We need a videographer for 10/3 Day 2 of songwriting in the classroom, 10/17 Day 3 at the recording studio and then editing of the final product into a music video using the song created by the students.

The video will be promoted in ASCAP’s Playback Magazine (circulation to 85,000 songwriters, composers and music industry professionals) and also on www.ASCAP.com

The songwriter residency is a mentorship program that provides a platform for songwriters to easily connect and give back to their local communities by engaging and inspiring elementary and middle school students in under-resourced neighborhoods.

They go into under funded schools that have little to no after school programming and they create a full fall, and fullspring season, 5 days/week, soccer and poetry. The 34th Starz Denver Film Festival, is scheduled for Nov. 2 - 13, 2011.

CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS!

We have a NEW wonderful, on-line system for Volunteer Registration and Scheduling this year, called SHIFTBOARD! As always, alll SDFF volunteers will receive a movie voucher for every five hours of work AND (as always) you will have a GREAT TIME, while at the same time, contribute to the success of the festival! Volunteers should be 18 years or older.

Sadho Poetry Film Festival, Hurry Deadline is Soon!

Entries are being invited for the 3rd Sadho Poetry Film Fest. This unique biennial festival, is the first and only one of its kind in Asia, and showcases the finest Poetry Films from all over the world.

We have had two successful festivals since 2007 where Sadho presented 136 films from 30 countries. Besides the main events in New Delhi, the travel version of the festival has taken the films to twelve other cities in India.

The London International Documentary Festival (LIDF) in association with the London Review of Books is calling for submissions. The call is open and international. All subject matter is considered. Short and Feature length films are accepted. First time and established filmmakers all welcome. This year, for the first time, there will be a special section for student films and an award - Best Student Film. Films must be produced after January 1st 2010.

The LIDF is the UK's largest independent documentary festival. Since 2007 the festival has worked to ensure that London is host to exciting, diverse, challenging and inspiring films from every corner of the globe.

The festival is committed to providing the highest quality platform for international documentaries and their directors. It does this by working with globally recognised partners and venues, such as the British Museum, the Barbican Centre, and the TATE modern. It also provides a year-round programme of screenings and other events.

The LIDF 2012 is scheduled to run between 23 May to 3 June 2012.

Actuality Media

Actuality Media is an organization that takes media students to developing countries to produce videos for social enterprises and nonprofits.

Last summer we had three successful outreaches in Latin America. In the summer of 2012 we are going back – Nicaragua, Honduras and Guatemala - and we are seeking out interested students to join us on this adventure.

A quick summary:

Lack of access to media resources keeps many brilliant social organizations out of the international spotlight. Actuality Media aims to rectify that.

Next summer, up to 5 crews will travel for a month to each outreach location. While on site, each 4-student crew will research, write, shoot and edit a short documentary film about a local social enterprise under the guidance of a supervising producer. Once the documentary is completed, the social enterprises that are the subject of the films will use the media to further their mission. The films these students create will be distributed internationally.

There is a program fee to participate in the outreaches, but it is very competitive compared to other study abroad and volunteering opportunities. There are currently no other organizations arranging video production programs like this. Students may apply either as individuals or in teams.

"Ritmo En Los Barrios" is just one video our crews made last summer.

The top three films will receive a public screening in the Colorado Filmmakers Showcase at the 34th Starz Denver Film Festival, November 2nd through 13th. HOW DOES IT WORK?
Submit your short film between September 19th and October 14th, 2011 and then get your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers to vote for you. Utilize social media, (Facebook, YouTube, etc.) to get your video seen and voted for! A judging panel will review the top ten qualified videos with the most public votes and will select the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners on October 27th, 2011. All short films must be original and cannot violate trademarks, copyrights, and/or rights of privacy or publicity. Contest is void where prohibited by law. Uni Shorts: International Student Film Festival

Festival will be held in April 2012.

Work submitted to this festival will need to have been completed by student crews as part of a tertiary film programme.

The call for entries has now gone out and we invite your institution to take part. Please find attached an entry form and regulations. Please feel free to print extra copies of the entry form for interested students/grads to enter.We will accept submissions by mail until November 30, 2011. Registration is NZD$50 or NZD$40 early bird registration if submitted to us by October 30, 2011.

We need your assistance to bring this to the attention of your students/recent graduates and also to sign the application form to verify the films were made as part of a course of study. There will be prizes for three different categories: best New Zealand film, Best International entry, Outstanding Performance and Best Overall. See attached for details. Please forward this email and attachments to student/grad who may be interested. Feel free to print extra copies of the entry form for interested students/grads to enter.

IIFFF is one of the major festivals of the independent cinema in Poland. Every year it provides an opportunity to present best feature films (animated as well) created in Poland and in other countries. Their authors have a unique opportunity to confront their creations with professional jury, other filmmakers and spontaneous audience.
The aim of The International Independent Feature Film Festival is not only to present the best films but also to reveal different aspects of the phenomenon labeled as independent cinema and its genres from various parts in the world.
The criterion of independence in case of IIFFF is treated relatively widely - the competition will see student shorts as well as professional full length feature films and entirely amateur productions will not be forgotten. There is no limitation to the topics and convention of films presented . The only restriction is that the films have to be non-commercial and match the profile of the festival (fiction films).
The upcoming edition of the festival will be held in the cinema "Kinoteka" in Warsaw, Poland between November 2 and 6, 2011. The deadline for the films in DVD format, along with entry forms is 10 October 2011, they should be sent to the following address:

MY HERO INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILM FEST EXTENDS SUBMISSION DEADLINE TO

LOS ANGELES, CA – 9/5/11– The MY HERO International Short Film Festival
has extended its deadline for submissions until October 1, 2011. The
festival is known for showcasing short films with a theme of heroes or
herosim and is accepting entries for the 2011 Dan Eldon Activist Award.
Eldon, an artist and activist, was a hero in the truest sense; a photo
journalist whose passion was to shed light on stories that needed to be
told. In 1993, 22-year-old Eldon was killed by an angry mob while
covering the conflict in Somalia. To honor Eldon’s memory and his
life’swork, the MY HERO International Short Film Festival will present the
Dan Eldon Activist Award to the short film that best addresses the theme
of “activism.”

Kathy Eldon, Dan Eldon’s mother, will present the award at the Screening
and Award Ceremony, which takes place December 3rd at the University of
Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts. Kathy Eldon is a
journalist, author and humanitarian who has channeled her grief and energy
into the Creative Visions Foundation, which helps artists, writers and
filmmakers use their artistic disciplines as vehicles of social change.

The festival is part of The MY HERO Project, a non-profit 501(c)3

“Fatti un film (Shoot it out– exhibit your short film)” international film contest linked to the scientific exhibition Homo sapiens. The great history of human diversity that will take place from November 10^th 2011 to February 19^th 2012.

The material can be found on our web site www.palazzoesposizioni.it within the section dedicated to the project, both in the Italian and English version of our site.

Fiction, documentary and animation short films, of the maximum length of 20 minutes, are admitted to participate.

The retrospective will be divided in two sections: Anteprime (Premières) will host short films appositively created for the project Fatti un film (Shoot it out), while Secondo tempo (Rerun) will present short films previously produced, but strictly linked to the above cited exhibition’s main topics.

The best short films will be selected for a retrospective to be presented at Palazzo delle Esposizioni on January 2012. The winners will be awarded by important representatives of Italian Cinema and critics to be announced. Shortly we will announce also the prizes of great value and utility to young film makers that will be offered by Canon, sponsor of the event.

The contest is quite innovative in the intent to create a dialogue between the exhibition’s themes and the art of cinema and it will be promoted widely. FVM 275 Advanced Compositing
Advanced Compositing will teach the node-based software system NUKE from The Foundry which is being used all over the industry from feature films to broadcast projects. It will introduce students to the node based architecture that is also used in Shake, Flame and Smoke. This is wonderful opportunity for students interested in digital effects to have an employable skill. Want to use the green screen? Learn Nuke! The course will be taught by Terrance Trieu, a Flame Artist who owns his own Flame and has won Emmy Awards for his visual effects.
- See Frederic to substitute this course for one of your program requirements (non-Core) that you aren’t excited about.

FVM 275 Digital Distribution
This course will combine elements of Flash, Dreamweaver, DVD Authoring, and general web distribution to help students set up sites and stream their work on internet sites such as Vimeo and YouTube. Create websites, a professional reel, and prepare films for online distribution. Get your work distributed and seen! Lauren Sienkiewicz is teaching the course.
This course will substitute for Flash, Dreamweaver, DVD Authoring, or other such required classes. (Next year it will replace them.)

Who is Robert Mark Kamen?

Robert Mark Kamen is a screenwriter with twenty-one films to his credit, including Taken, The Fifth Element,The Karate Kid and The Transporterfranchises. A native of the Bronx, he attended New York City public schools, and graduated from NYU with a degree in literature, later earning his Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Pennsylvania.

After spending a year in Afghanistan in 1971, Robert wrote a novel based on his experience. At the urging of a director friend, he turned the novel into a screenplay, bought by Warner Brothers in 1979. His second screenplay, TAPS, was released in 1980. This fall sees Robert’s twentieth feature, COLOMBIANA, released and his twenty-first film, TAKEN 2, begin production.

For the past sixteen years, he has been a frequent collaborator with director/producer Luc Besson. In addition to being a full-time screenwriter, Robert grows grapes and makes wine on the vineyard he built thirty-one years ago in Sonoma, California.

(Atlanta)--- June 13, 2011— The new extended film submissions deadline for the BronzeLens Film Festival is July 15, 2011. Entries are now being accepted in all categories which include Narrative Fiction, Shorts, Documentaries and Music Videos. Prestigious top honors will be given in each genre. “We have opted to extend our deadline for submissions due to the great interest we have had from filmmakers in participating in the festival. Thus far entries have come from across the United States and abroad”, said Deidre McDonald Artistic Director, BronzeLens Film Festival.

Over the course of four days November 10-13, 2011 in Atlanta, Georgia producers of the BronzeLens Film Festival will host the who’s who of the film production industry, film lovers, actors, as well as prospective new of film makers. The event will foster an opportunity for attendees to share a creative platform of education, entertainment and empowerment discussions related to film, as well as television and the production of both.

Deadline for Film Submission
The official deadline for film submission is July 15, 2011. Late submissions must be received by July 31, 2011. I thought I would drop you a quick email hoping that maybe your students might be interested in our recent call for entries or just general info about our unique shorts festival.

Hello--we are Couch Fest Films. Couch Fest Films is a unique shorts film festival held in strangers' houses all on one day--all over the world. Yes, yes, it is a logistical nightmare...but unfortunately, we love it!!!! 2011 will be our 4th year running.

Blah, blah, blah. We are writing you with the idea that maybe your students might be interested in hearing about our scrappy little film fest or about or recent call for entries. We are proud that we are changing the typical model for film festivals while also sharing some of the best shorts around. Our motto is that if you have crappy films--you have a crappy film fest. So, no matter how neat your idea for a film fest will be...you still have to have wicked good programming. Anyway, I could keep rambling...but maybe I should wait to see if there might be any interest from your end.

Couch Fest Films is not an online event nor a broadcast event. We are a film festival that replaces traditional theater venues with cozy residential venues.

Internationally acclaimed Canadian filmmaker, Atom Egoyan, will guest judge the fifth annual Toronto Urban Film Festival (TUFF), awarding the top prizes of the festival!

Call for Submissions - Deadline: July 15, 2011

Filmmakers, animators and video artists are invited to submit one-minute silent films for an urban public. TUFF is open to Canadian and international artists; pays artist fees; and awards thousands in cash and prizes.

The Toronto Urban Film Festival (TUFF), the only festival of its kind in North America, reaches over 1.3 million subway commuters daily. Recently named one of MovieMaker Magazine's '20 Coolest Film Festivals,' TUFF takes place September 9 - 18, 2011 on Onestop platform screens across the Toronto subway system.

The 2011 Cannes Film Festival has come to a close, and we hope you all enjoyed following it as much as we did here at The Economist magazine. For those students and professors who were lucky enough to be there in person this year, you likely saw The Economist’s presence in The American Pavilion’s wireless café.

The Economist’s support of The American Pavilion is linked to a new initiative that we have developed in partnership with the highly respected U.S. television news program PBS NewsHour. This initiative, The Economist Film Project, is designed to showcase independent documentary films from around the world. We invite the documentary filmmakers among youto submit your films to the project.

From Abu Dhabi to Albuquerque, from astronomy to agriculture, we are working with documentary filmmakers to generate exposure for films that, like The Economist magazine itself, offer new ideas, perspectives, and insights that not only help make sense of the world, but also take a stand and provoke debate.

Topics and themes to be considered can include (but are not limited to) economics, the environment, society, health care, human rights, immigration, the arts, science & technology, war, religion, politics, government, media, justice, cultural shifts, etc.

Selected films and the topics they explore will serve as the subject of news segments airing regularly on PBS NewsHour. The first segment aired on April 28, 2011, and airings will continue through 2011 and into 2012. Six to eight minutes of footage from selected films will be included in these news segments. The Economist will provide a grant of $4,000 to each selected filmmaker to support the editing process needed to create the footage and the segment. Filmmakers will retain all rights to their film and the excerpted footage.

Free International Student Screenwriting Competition

Help recreate Richard Linklater’s indie feature, Slacker

Use your talents to help us remake Slacker!

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of Richard Linklater’s seminal indie feature, Slacker, The Austin Film Society and The Alamo Drafthouse are producing a scene-by-scene remake of the film by a collective of top filmmakers.

The new version of the film’s final scene will be a compilation of work by filmmakers and fans from all over the world. Shoot and submit your version of the final scene to show how influential and inspiring the original film has been to filmmakers from a wide variety of backgrounds.

The original final scene showed a group of energetic camera-wielding revelers running up Mt. Bonnell in Austin and throwing a Super-8 camera from the top of the hill. The final images of the film were impressionistic blurred frames taken by the falling camera. Ideally, the new videos will consist of similar shots of people running up mountains, buildings, piers, lighthouses, sand dunes, cliffs, etc., and throwing (or pretending to throw) cameras off the top. The greater the variety of filmmakers and locations, the better—whatever makes you and your area unique!

We encourage you to prepare by watching the original scene for free on Hulu.com.

-driving to the site (convertible optional!)
-feet running up
-full-body shots running up
-arriving at the top
-jumping around/playing at the top
-visible vistas
-preparing to throw the camera
-throwing (or pretending to throw) the camera
-the resulting footage from the thrown camera (not required)

Any originating format from Super8 to RED 4k to iPhone and everything in between will be accepted, as long as you send the completed scene as a DVD or high-quality MPEG-4 file (H.264). Only rough edits are necessary since we will be combining your footage with filmmakers from all over the world.

The festival is now the leading UK gateway to the world’s most prestigious short film and animation awards (Academy Awards®, BAFTAs, Cartoon D’Or and European Film Awards). Napa Valley Film Festival Announces 2011 Call for Entries

Filmmakers are invited to submit for inaugural Film Festival November 9-13, 2011, featuring new independent films as well as Napa Valley’s finest food, wine and hospitality

NAPA, Calif.– Napa Valley Film Festival (NVFF) Co-Founders and Directors Brenda and Marc Lhormer have announced they are now accepting film submissions for the first annual Napa Valley Film Festival. Showcasing the best of new independent cinema while embracing the epicurean pleasures of Napa Valley, NVFF will debut November 9-13, 2011 with a five-day festival spread over four of the Napa Valley’s postcard-perfect towns in Napa, Yountville, St. Helena and Calistoga.

The Festival is welcoming submissions of any theme and will be selecting more than 50 new films, including narrative features, foreign films (world cinema), documentaries, short films, and student works. Organizers are looking for films that best entertain, inspire, educate and intrigue audiences. Categories eligible for Juried and/or Audience Awards include: Best U.S. Dramatic Feature, Best U.S. Documentary Feature, Best World Cinema (Dramatic and Doc), Best Live Action Short, Best Animated Short, and Best Documentary Short Subject.

The Napa Valley Film Festival is dedicated to serving the interests and needs of independent filmmakers by connecting artist with audience, exhibiting and promoting new films, and nurturing a creative community with mutually rewarding relationships that last well beyond each year’s festival. Located in a world-class destination, the Festival invites filmmakers of all selected films to experience the finest hospitality and events, wonderful food and wine, appreciative audiences, and the opportunity to explore the most celebrated wine country in the world.

The inaugural NVFF will include discussion panels with industry executives, Q&A sessions with the filmmakers, wine and food tastings, opening and closing night premieres and parties, awards ceremonies, VIP receptions and winemaker dinners, and celebrity tribute programs. NVFF will also feature a unique community-focused footprint, with screening and hospitality venues clustered in four walk-able villages in Napa Valley’s distinctive small cities and towns: Napa, Yountville, St. Helena and Calistoga. Films and filmmakers will travel from village to village, while festival attendees can choose whether to remain in one community or to sample the different venues.

Now in its second year, the BronzeLens Film Festival will take place November 10-13, 2011 in Atlanta, Georgia. Calls for Entries are now open for submission in all categories which include:

North Hollywood, CA – The International Student Film Festival Hollywood (ISFFH) is now accepting submissions for its 9th annual Film and Video Competition. The Festival will be held in the NoHo Arts District of North Hollywood, CA USA November 5 – 6, 2011. The competition is open to students of all ages and academic backgrounds. Participants must be registered in elementary, junior high or high school, community college, university, graduate or private film schools. Students compete with their own peers (i.e. high school students will only compete with other high school students) and the competition is open to students of all ages and academic backgrounds.

Awards are presented to winners after their films are judged by a panel of professional filmmakers, writers, directors, producers, actors, distributors, agents, film critics and professors that comprise the jury. Films go through an initial screening, are separated into genres, go before a panel of preliminary judges, then on to the blue ribbon judges.

Hollywood is the capital city of the entertainment world. The International Student Film Festival Hollywood is the only film festival that embraces all ages from around the world, offering students the unique opportunity to gain the recognition of film industry leaders creating career development opportunities in their home countries as well as the United States.

The opportunities provided by the ISFFH not only benefit the students, but the world community by bringing together people of diverse cultures and differing viewpoints. ISFFH Founder and President, Robin Saban, has been spending time in Europe promoting the Festival. Los Angeles-based Social Science Recordings and Singer/Songwriter Vincent Minor are launching an open call for music video submissions. This nation-wide open call is for ambitious, aspiring filmmakers and individuals interested in creating compelling video content. Students, amateurs, semi-pros, auteurs and pets are all eligible to enter. Submissions must be the original work of the entrant. Finalist will be selected by Vincent Minor and Social Science Recordings and the winning video will be awarded $1500.

17th Annual Twin Rivers Media Festival Call for Entries

The 17th Annual Twin Rivers Media Festival is still accepting entries in Animation, Short Drama, Experimental, Feature, Documentary, Outdoor, Commercial, Audio and Scriptwriting. Official Selections and past favorites will be shown at the Courtyard Gallery and other Asheville, NC venues on May 27-29, 2011. Scriptwriting Division results will be announced in September of each year.

Films must be submitted on DVD and have been completed in the last 3 years.

The 2011 entry deadlines are:

Entry Deadline (postmark): April 15, 2011

Extended deadline (arrival): April 29th (+$10)

Late deadline (arrival): May 13 (+$20)

Standard fees are $19 for one or the first entry and $10 for each additional entry.

Student fees are $10 for the first entry and $8 dollars for each additional entry.

Colleges and Universities can enter on behalf of their students at $100 for up to 20 entries, or $10 per entry, whichever is less. Distributor fee is 25 per entry. All foreign entries add $10 dollars to cover bank charges. Make checks payable to Courtyard Gallery.

Entries must be shipped in sturdy reusable containers. All expenses for shipped work, including insurance and return postage are the responsibility of the media artist. Hello,

I wanted to reach out to you to present an opportunity for your students to show off their creative filmmaking and video skills and win a $4,000 cash prize by entering Nextivity, Inc.’s video contest. Submission entry has been below expectation, we felt that reaching out to those in your field would help spread the word of the contest and provide an excellent opportunity for students.

The contest features Cel-Fi, an indoor mobile phone reception booster. Applicants are invited to create an original 30-60 second video in which an indoor reception issue is resolved by installing a Cel-Fi system. Each video must conclude with the phrase, “Cel-Fi makes the connection… the rest is up to you.”

These finalists will be placed on Nextivity Inc.’s official Facebook page and the world will be invited to vote for one grand prize winner, who will receive a $4,000 cash prize. Below, I have outlined details of the contest for you to share with your students.

Pittsburgh Horror Film Festival student discount

Hello,

I wanted to shoot over an update and extend a discount rate to your students if they are interested in submitting any of their work to the Pittsburgh Horror Film Festival. We would be accepting Feature, Short, and Scripts at the rate of $35 with a copy of a student ID. Our festival has received submissions from all over the world but we really would like to have a stronger student filmmaker presence at our event.
